Through Saclyn, New Jersey founder Neha Mahajan helps women discover designer handbags with greater flexibility and freedom from permanent ownership.
A designer handbag can feel like a statement of who you are. Yet personal style rarely stands still. The bag that feels perfect for one season, one celebration, or one chapter of life may not be the one you reach for a year later. Neha Mahajan noticed this tension, and she built a business around resolving it.
As the founder of Saclyn, a designer handbag membership based in New Jersey, Mahajan is challenging a long-held assumption: that enjoying a beautiful designer bag must always mean buying it outright. Her answer is a more flexible, considered approach to luxury, one captured in the brand's tagline, "Luxury that moves with you."
The Question That Started Saclyn
Mahajan founded Saclyn around a single, honest question. Why should enjoying a designer handbag always require a permanent purchase?
"Sometimes, you don't know what belongs in your life until you experience it," she says. "I created Saclyn to give women the freedom to discover what feels right for them, without every discovery having to become a permanent decision."
Traditional ownership often means committing to one bag long after the moment or mood that inspired it has passed. A handbag that feels ideal today may not reflect who you are six months from now. Mahajan wanted to create another option, one that allows women to explore their style before committing, to enjoy different bags for different occasions, and to make luxury a more flexible part of their lives.
This is not a rejection of ownership. It is a recognition that ownership does not have to be the only way to experience designer fashion. Saclyn adds a new path rather than replacing an old one.
More Than Rental: A Philosophy of Discovery
It would be easy to describe Saclyn as a designer handbag rental service. That description misses the point.
Rather than positioning itself as a cheaper alternative to buying, Saclyn focuses on discovery, flexibility, and personal expression. Through a curated collection of authenticated designer handbags, members can explore different designers, experiment with styles, and find what truly fits their lives.
The platform offers two ways in. For a single occasion there is the Weekly Pass, which needs no membership at all. For ongoing access there are memberships, starting at $119 a month: Signature covers bags from $1,200 to $3,000 retail, and Statement, at $229 a month, opens the full closet, including pieces above $3,000. Members carry one bag per billing cycle, keep it as long as they like, and choose their next when they are ready. The experience is designed around moments, not catalogs.
Saclyn's curation spans timeless icons and everyday companions, from houses including Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Celine. The emphasis is on thoughtful selection rather than simply offering more. Each piece is chosen to suit real life, from travel and celebrations to the ordinary days that still deserve something beautiful.
Members also receive support along the way. A personal stylist named Margaux recommends bags based on each member's Style DNA, turning discovery into a guided, personal experience. Prepaid shipping both ways and optional Care+ damage cover remove friction, while the Saclyn Girls creator community extends the sense of belonging.
Pay for the Occasion, Not the Month
Most ways to borrow luxury still begin with a commitment. You sign up for a month, then another, whether you need a bag for every week of it or for one evening. Mahajan compares it to buying a monthly transit pass when all you need is one ride.
Saclyn's Weekly Pass was built for that one ride. After a short application, a woman can choose any available bag in the closet, from an everyday Celine to a Chanel flap, for one, two or three weeks. She pays once, up front, with prepaid shipping both ways. There is no membership to join and nothing to cancel afterward. Her rental days begin the day the bag arrives, not the day it ships, and when the occasion is over she mails it back with the prepaid label.
"Not every woman needs a new bag every month," Mahajan says. "Sometimes you need the right bag for one wedding, one interview or one vacation. You shouldn't have to sign up for a whole month to have it."
The Weekly Pass is priced per bag, starting at $72 a week, so the cost follows the piece she chooses rather than a flat monthly fee. If she loves the experience, a membership is there whenever she wants ongoing access. If not, the Weekly Pass simply ends when the bag goes back.
Why Trust Sits at the Center
A luxury experience only works when members can trust what they carry. Mahajan understood this from the beginning.
Building a membership model meant answering real questions. Can members trust the authenticity of the bags? How does sourcing work? What happens when a bag is shipped, carried, and returned? For Saclyn, operational discipline matters as much as the product itself.
To earn that trust, Saclyn sources through established vendors, primarily in Japan, where secondhand luxury markets are known for their rigor. Every bag is then examined by Saclyn's in-house authentication expert and verified with Entrupy, an authentication technology used across the luxury resale industry, before it joins the closet. This layered approach gives members greater confidence in every piece they receive.
"I believe the most meaningful way to build trust is not through extravagant promises," Mahajan says, "but through transparency, a thoughtful customer experience, and a clear understanding of what customers actually need."
That founder-led discipline shapes the entire platform. Mahajan is building Saclyn one decision at a time, learning directly from the questions and concerns women raise about handbag membership. The result is a brand that feels considered rather than rushed.
A Closet That Evolves With You
Saclyn's deeper idea is that personal style is not static. The way women experience luxury should have room to evolve.
A member might carry a timeless icon for a milestone celebration, then switch to something practical for a season of travel, then explore an entirely new designer simply because it reflects who she is now. Each choice is a chapter, not a contract.
This flexibility speaks to how modern women actually live. Careers shift. Tastes mature. Occasions come and go. Saclyn's closet is designed to move alongside those changes, offering variety without the weight of permanent commitment. For members who want something more lasting, the Founders Circle is limited to fifty members: a $3,000 entry funds more than 18 months of Statement access, and its value grows with every price adjustment Saclyn makes.
The philosophy also reframes what luxury can mean. It is not about owning less for its own sake, nor about renting instead of buying. It is about freedom: the freedom to decide, on your own terms, how you want to experience designer fashion.
Mahajan sees this as part of a broader cultural shift. The way people think about luxury is changing, and she believes women deserve more ways to experience it. Saclyn is her contribution to that future, a platform where discovery is encouraged and self-expression is never locked into a single decision.
Luxury That Moves With You
Saclyn represents a fresh way of thinking about designer handbags. It invites women to explore, to experiment, and to let their style grow without feeling tied to one choice forever.
If you have ever admired a designer bag but hesitated at the permanence of buying it, Saclyn offers another door. You can discover icons you have always wanted to try, find pieces for the moments that matter most, and carry each one with confidence in its authenticity. You can treat your closet as something living, something that reflects who you are today and remains open to who you become tomorrow.
