How Liane Wood turned corporate expertise into a mission that helps therapists build thriving practices.

Most people do not leave a thriving corporate career to start over. Liane Wood did exactly that. After owning and operating three successful insurance brokerages, she walked away from the world of sales and spreadsheets to retrain as a psychotherapist. What she discovered on the other side would shape the next chapter of her life and the futures of thousands of clinicians across the field.

From Boardrooms to Breakthroughs

Liane Wood spent years building a reputation as a sharp, results-driven business leader. She knew how to launch companies, manage teams, and grow profit. Yet something was missing. She wanted work that connected her more directly to people and purpose. So she made a bold decision. She left behind the corporate world and trained to become a psychotherapist.

The transition was fulfilling, but it revealed a surprising gap. Therapists receive extensive clinical training, yet almost no education on how to run a private practice. Liane watched talented clinicians struggle with pricing, marketing, and burnout. She recognized the problem immediately because she had spent decades solving exactly those challenges in other industries.

"Success used to mean sales and spreadsheets," she says. "Now it means helping people build lives and private practices they actually want to wake up to."

Finding BYPP, Then Leading It

Liane first encountered Build Your Private Practice Inc. (BYPP) as a client. She was searching for the same business support she wished every therapist could access. The experience resonated so deeply that, in 2023, she acquired the company and stepped into the role of CEO.

Her goal was clear. She wanted to expand the mission, broaden the reach, and give therapists the tools she wished she had when she started her own practice. BYPP already had a strong foundation. Liane brought the strategic lens of a seasoned entrepreneur who had built and scaled businesses across multiple sectors.

That combination is rare. Many private practice coaches learned by making their own single practice work, then decided to teach others. While valuable, that experience often lacks broad business depth. Liane brings decades of leadership and a wider view of what it truly takes to build something sustainable and profitable.

A Mission Bigger Than Business

The stakes extend far beyond individual therapists. Across the field, skilled clinicians are leaving the profession. They are not short on compassion or talent. They simply were never taught how to build and sustain a private practice. The result is burnout, financial instability, and reduced access to quality mental health care.

BYPP exists to change that. Its mission is to help therapists create financially stable, scalable practices so they can keep doing the work they love. When therapists thrive, more people can access the care they need.

"We cannot afford to lose great therapists to burnout," Liane says. "When we help them build stronger private practices, we help more people access quality care."

This is the heart of her leadership. She views each therapist she supports as part of a larger system that becomes more resilient with every sustainable practice built.

Programs Built on Experience, Not Theory

BYPP meets therapists at every stage of their journey. Through its signature programs, Launch Your Practice, Accelerate Your Practice, and Scale Your Practice, the company walks clinicians step by step through launching, growing, and scaling their work.

What sets these programs apart is the focus on implementation and mentorship rather than passive information. Therapists do not need another course that gathers dust. They need a clear path, expert support, and a community that understands both the practical and emotional sides of running a practice.

BYPP also rejects the hustle mindset. Instead of pushing therapists to work harder, the team helps them build businesses aligned with their values, energy, and long-term goals. That means stronger boundaries, more time freedom, and a model that supports life rather than draining it.

"Therapists deserve to thrive, not just survive," Liane says. "When they have the tools to run sustainable private practices, the entire mental health system becomes more accessible, resilient, and effective."

Growing Reach and Rising Influence

This  year reflects how quickly BYPP is expanding its impact. The company hosted its third  annual BYPP Summit, this time in a hybrid format (in person and online) that welcomed therapists from across the field. Liane launched the Build Your Private Practice podcast in 2025 to share practical strategies and behind-the-scenes insights with a wider audience.

She also delivered two national training webinars in partnership with Jane App and served as a keynote speaker at a major industry symposium. Her expertise reached even broader audiences through an appearance on CP24's Breakfast Television. Meanwhile, the BYPP team facilitated dozens of live trainings and workshops.

Another significant milestone this year, was receiving approval from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and the Ontario Association for Mental Health Professionals (OAMHP) for continuing education credits (CECs) for Launch Your Practice, Accelerate Your Practice, and Scale Your Practice. This approval enables clinicians to earn CECs while actively working on and growing their private practices.

The free online BYPP community has grown to more than 8,900 therapists over the past ten years. That growth speaks to a simple truth. Clinicians are hungry for real support, and they recognize it when they find it.

Courage at the Core

Liane's leadership is grounded in values that extend well beyond business. She has received the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General of Canada and a medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for a life-saving act. These honors are not tied to her company, yet they reflect the same qualities that define her work today: courage, integrity, and a deep commitment to helping others.

That spirit shows up in everything BYPP does. Liane and her team understand the challenges therapists face around marketing, pricing, mindset, and burnout, because they have lived those challenges themselves. The result is mentorship that feels both credible and genuinely human.

Redefining Success in Mental Health

Liane Wood's story is one of reinvention. She bridged two worlds that rarely meet, business leadership and clinical care, and created something powerful at the intersection. Her work proves that financial stability and meaningful purpose are not opposites. They can and should coexist.

For therapists, that message is liberating. They no longer have to choose between serving clients well and sustaining their own well-being. With the right tools, guidance, and community, they can build practices that support their income, their lives, and the communities they serve.
