A workspace startup betting that "work from anywhere" needs infrastructure of trust to truly deliver.
You book a "quiet" desk for an important afternoon. You arrive, and it sits beside a construction site. The Wi-Fi that looked fine on the listing cannot hold your client call. The space looks nothing like its photos. None of this shows up in a star rating, until it is already happening to you.
Rohan Mehrotra knows that gamble well. So does his co-founder, Alisha Aneja. Together they built Space Penguin, an Australian startup, to close the gap that almost every remote and hybrid worker has quietly learned to accept.
The Gap Nobody Was Solving
Australia's short-term workspace market is worth an estimated $537 million. It nearly doubled in size between 2020 and 2025. Yet as the category exploded, the guesswork baked into it never went away.
"For too long, finding a reliable place to work outside the office has meant a gamble," says Mehrotra, who leads growth and marketing at Space Penguin. "Unreliable Wi-Fi, noisy rooms, spaces that do not match the photos. We built Space Penguin because professionals deserve to know exactly what they are walking into, whether that is for two hours or two months."
Most platforms in this space solve for availability. They show you that a desk exists nearby and let you book it. That is where they stop. Space Penguin treats the booking as the starting point, not the finish line.
The difference lives in the details competitors leave out. Wi-Fi reliability. Noise. Comfort. These are the qualitative signals that decide whether your time at a desk actually goes well. Space Penguin builds them into how it vets and lists every workspace, so booking feels like a known quantity rather than a roll of the dice.
Two Founders, One Standard
Space Penguin runs on a simple test. Aneja, who leads product and technology, puts it plainly.
"Every space on Space Penguin is judged the same way a good host judges their own home," she says. "Would I actually want to work here? That is the bar competitors are not setting."
That standard comes from experience. Mehrotra brings more than twenty years of ad tech across the Asia-Pacific region, having previously founded Transcending Monkeys, and holds an MBA from the University of Wollongong. Aneja's background spans CommBank, CSIRO, and EMBL-EBI Cambridge. One founder obsesses over how customers find and trust the product. The other obsesses over what they actually receive.
The company operates from Melbourne's CBD and Sydney's Ultimo, and its tagline, "Your World Office," captures the mission. It aims to free modern workers from unpredictable workspaces so they can stay focused and creative wherever life takes them.
More Than a Marketplace
Space Penguin is not simply a booking platform. It pairs its on-demand workspace marketplace with a virtual address and mailbox service, backed by physical locations in Sydney and Melbourne.
That combination matters. The same person who uses Space Penguin to find a desk for the afternoon can also run their registered business address through it. Nobody else in the category offers both under one roof. As a result, Space Penguin builds trust with the same customer across more than one part of their business at once.
Consider the platforms it gets compared to most. Deskpass gives pay-as-you-go access across a wide network, but little sense of what you are walking into. Hotdesk covers forty-five countries with frictionless booking, yet shares the same blind spot on Wi-Fi, noise, and comfort. OfficeHub reads more like a directory you enquire through than something you book instantly. GetCroissant runs a subscription model that works well in the US and Europe but barely touches Australia.
Every one of them treats the booking as the finish line. Space Penguin does not.
Traction That Backs the Bet
The idea has moved fast. Since launching in late 2025, Space Penguin has grown to more than 1,000 paying customers across multiple countries in under a year.
The momentum did not go unnoticed. In 2026, the company was named to the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Accelerator Program, known as MAP, one of Australia's longest-running university-affiliated startup accelerators. For Mehrotra, the selection carried weight beyond the headline.
"Being selected for MAP is not just a badge," he says. "It is the University of Melbourne looking at what we have built and telling us the scale we are capable of reaching. It is fuel to go after this gap in the market even harder."
Space Penguin recently partnered with workspace operator Workspace365 to expand across Sydney and Queensland, with listings now reaching into Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra. The company is also fielding a growing number of conversations with early-stage investors as it scales.

Why It Matters
The real story is not really about the two founders. It is about a promise the industry made and never fully kept.
"Work from anywhere" was sold as freedom. Yet nobody built the infrastructure of trust that freedom actually needs. A worker cannot be free if every booking is a gamble on whether the Wi-Fi will hold or the room will be quiet. Freedom without reliability is just a nicer-looking form of stress.
Space Penguin exists to supply the missing piece. It offers desks, private offices, meeting rooms, and day passes with real-time availability and instant online booking. It lists public spaces, including libraries with free access. It gives space owners a place to list their rooms. And it backs all of it with Australian-based support.
The category is still wide open. As the short-term workspace market keeps growing, the platform that solves for trust, rather than mere availability, stands to define what comes next. Space Penguin is building for exactly that future.
