Caiden’s Hope Foundation: Supporting Parents of Premature Babies in the NICU

Caiden’s Hope Foundation is a compassionate organization born from a deeply personal experience. Founded by Wayne Keller, Executive Director, and his longtime friend, Ed Call, the foundation provides vital support to families with premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), offering emotional and financial relief during their child’s hospitalization.

The story behind Caiden’s Hope Foundation began with a close friendship between Ed Call and Wayne Keller, who had known each other since eighth grade in Copperas Cove, Texas. Throughout their lives, they supported each other through various milestones, including weddings and family celebrations. One life-altering event occurred when Ed’s daughter, Jennifer, became pregnant with her first child, Caiden.

At seven months pregnant, Jennifer began feeling unwell and decided to take a nap. Her condition worsened, prompting her roommate to contact Jennifer’s doctor. The doctor immediately requested an examination, and five days later, Caiden was born prematurely—two and a half months early. He was transferred to UCLA Medical Center, where Ed and his wife, Terry, followed in their car to be with their daughter.

As Jennifer remained by Caiden’s side during his long stay in the NICU, the medical team advised her not to get too attached, as they believed Caiden would not survive past two months. Despite these grim predictions, Caiden defied the odds and, in January 2025, celebrated his 15th birthday.

Wayne and his wife, Sharleen, were profoundly moved by the difficulties their friends faced, particularly the emotional and financial stress of having a child in the NICU. Although they were 1,500 miles away in Texas, they felt compelled to help. After months of reflection and prayer, they realized they were being called to provide support to other NICU parents, leading to the formation of Caiden’s Hope Foundation.

The foundation’s mission is to relieve the burdens faced by NICU parents, offering financial assistance for lodging, meals, and basic needs. It also provides emotional support to ensure parents can focus on their child’s care rather than the financial strain of extended hospital stays.

In addition to providing direct support, Caiden’s Hope Foundation raises awareness about the often-overlooked challenges faced by NICU families, including the emotional toll of being separated from their newborns as well as the day-to-day expenses they experience.

What sets Caiden’s Hope Foundation apart is its holistic approach. By working closely with hospital social services departments, the foundation connects families with essential resources and provides a supportive network to help them navigate the NICU experience.
