Stephen Cox’s Latest Collection: A Fusion of Sketches and Vintage Aesthetics
A Journey Through Creative Design
In a recent presentation, Stephen Cox, one half of the Ducky Brown design duo, showcased an innovative collection characterized by a focus on original sketches and costume design. This debut collection encapsulates a blend of artistic expression and wearable fashion, showcasing a wide array of 36 unique garments, each derived from Cox’s expressive sketches.
Sourcing Inspiration: Vintage Cotton from Greece
The collection prominently features vintage striped cotton, prominently sourced from Greece. Cox explained that the relaxed business environment in Greece fosters creativity: “The way they do business there is so great compared to here, it’s relaxing. It’s cigarettes and espresso before you do anything.”
Distinctive Garment Features
Tailored Innovations
- Customized double-breasted coats adorned with bold blue and white stripes, integrating a unique “kangaroo” pocket.
- A standout bomber jacket that includes a dramatic 10-foot-long tie wrapped stylishly around the waist.
- Pants featuring super-gathered waists that add striking volume, reminiscent of the 70s aesthetic.
- Extended shirts now reaching the floor, enhanced with a 4-inch pointed collar and unique tied collars.
Bringing Paisley into the Mix
A surprising yet compelling addition to the collection is the introduction of paisley patterns juxtaposed with stripes. Cox remarked, “I don’t know why I added Paisley to the stripes. I loved the idea.” This blend not only reinforces the collection’s commitment to visual interest but also reflects Cox’s willingness to explore unconventional design pathways.
Sales and Market Response
Despite being newly launched, the collection has already attracted significant attention, with 12 pieces reported as sold. As the collection gains traction, it underscores the viability and appeal of Cox’s unique stylistic approach.
