Wong says Ossu’s diamonds aren’t treated or altered to create a specific colour.

According to their website, the colour is influenced naturally from the combination of carbon and other trace elements within your beloved’s ashes or fur. Like a well-aged whisky, nitrogen and other microscopic defects create shades ranging from off-clear to champagne, amber, and cognac.

This is another unique aspect of their diamonds many customers feel drawn to, adding to the story behind each piece.

6: Unfinished Business

Some people are happy keeping an urn forever. Others look at it and wonder, “What am I supposed to do with this?”

How Does Hair or Ashes Become A Diamond?

According to Wong, the company extracts and purifies carbon from the material customers send, then uses it to grow a diamond through chemical vapour deposition, or CVD. Inside a controlled chamber, carbon-containing gas supplies the carbon that crystallizes onto a small diamond seed. The resulting stone is then cut, polished and independently graded by the International Gemological Institute before being set into jewelry.

The full process takes an estimated five to six months.

According to their website, to ensure transparency and peace of mind, each order receives a unique identification number, customers’ material is processed individually, and each stage of the transformation is documented and shared with customers.

For Wong, the finished piece has to answer the personal question that brought someone to Ossu in the first place.

“They meant the world to you. What you do in their memory should feel worthy of that,” he says.
