Prada Frame 2023: A Focus on Design and Transit
Milan’s Centre Rail Station became a hub of interdisciplinary ideas last week during the fourth edition of the Prada Frame Program, which coincided with the renowned Salon dell Mobile. The event sought to address pressing contemporary issues through the lens of design and culture.
Curatorial Expertise of Formafantasma
The Prada Frame Program has been curated annually by the design and research studio Formafantasma, established in 2009 by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. Their body of work examines the interplay of natural and built environments, delving into novel material and social opportunities. Over the last four years, the curation approach has evolved significantly, reflecting broader themes in contemporary design.
This Year’s Theme: Transit
This year’s overarching theme, “Transit,” facilitated an in-depth investigation into the infrastructures that support our daily lives, both seen and unseen. As Trimarchi remarks, “We’re interested in investigating not only how objects are designed, but how the systems that support and move them work.”
Significance of Venue Selection
Each year’s location is intricately connected to the program’s theme. Previous events were hosted in historical sites such as the Neo-Renaissance House Museum and Teatro Filodrammatici, one of Milan’s oldest theaters. The 2023 symposium also utilized the Arlecchino train—designed by Gio Ponti and Giulio Minoletti—which serves as an elegant representation of post-war Italian design.
Trimarchi emphasizes the importance of venue choice, stating, “These are not just venues; they are part of the story.” This year’s selections aim to highlight mobility and infrastructure as tangible realities rather than abstract notions.
Intimacy in Exchange of Ideas
The Arlecchino’s home-like atmosphere creates an environment that fosters intimacy, shifting the focus towards the personal exchange of ideas. Unlike many visual-centric events during the Salon, this symposium prioritizes dialogue and interaction over visual displays. According to Trimarchi, “This choice promotes intimacy and focuses purely on the exchange of ideas.”
