She Couldn’t Find the Prenatal Massage She Needed in Dubai, So She Built It

Award-winning Empress Balinese Massage began with one pregnant woman’s search for specialist care. Today its all-female team of senior Indonesian therapists, all of them mothers, brings prenatal, postnatal and Balinese massage to homes across Dubai.

Amna Ibrahim was pregnant, uncomfortable, and searching. Dubai had no shortage of spas, yet none offered what her changing body needed: experienced, specialist prenatal massage delivered at home, by a therapist who treated pregnancy as more than a standard appointment with a few small adjustments. The gap she discovered during those months would become the foundation of Empress Balinese Massage.

That frustration proved to be an insight. If an executive assistant with a demanding career could not find proper prenatal care, other women in Dubai were almost certainly facing the same wall. Three and a half years later, thousands of client reviews confirm she was right.

A Personal Need Became a Business

When Amna founded Empress, she did not quit her job and leap. She built carefully. For the first two years, she continued working full-time as an executive assistant while growing the company alongside it, investing her own savings and starting with just two therapists.

"Empress started because, when I was pregnant, I couldn't find the service I needed," she says. "Three and a half years later, thousands of client reviews have shown me that I wasn't the only woman looking for it."

The company became profitable in its second year. Today, Empress has grown into a 15-person team, with a client base so loyal that monthly retention sits between 60 and 65 percent. Those numbers are not accidental. They are the result of a deliberate choice to prioritize quality over speed.

Why Pregnant Women Deserve Better

Prenatal and postnatal wellness remain closest to Amna's mission, because pregnancy was the reason Empress existed at all. The company treats maternity massage as its own discipline, never as a standard massage with minor adjustments.

Empress treatments for pregnancy use appropriate positioning, pregnancy pillows, carefully selected techniques and considered pressure levels. Particular attention goes to common concerns such as muscular tension, heaviness and fluid retention. The care continues into the postpartum period, adapting to the changing needs of a mother's recovery.

This intentional approach extends to what Empress will not do. The company only offers prenatal massage from twenty weeks of pregnancy onward, choosing a particularly cautious, wellness-focused stance. Saying no to some bookings protects the standard the brand is built on.

Because of this focus, Empress has developed a strong relationship with Dubai's community of mothers and mothers-to-be, regularly participating in maternity and family-focused events across the city.

Experienced Hands, Chosen Carefully

Trust in an at-home wellness company is as important as technique. Clients invite a therapist into one of their most private spaces, so professionalism, hygiene and reliability are fundamental to the Empress model. Every Empress therapist is a woman and a mother herself, something pregnant clients and new mothers in particular value from the very first visit.

The therapists make the difference. Empress recruits senior Indonesian therapists almost exclusively through recommendations from the existing team. They average around fifteen years of experience, ranging from seven to twenty-seven years, and all hold international five-star hotel backgrounds. Most come from Bali, with others from Java and Lombok.

"We don't recruit simply to fill vacancies," Amna explains. Protecting the quality and consistency of the Empress experience matters more than growing quickly. That discipline shows in the reviews: more than 2,400 combined across Google and Fresha, each platform holding a 4.9 rating.

More Than Balinese Massage

While authentic Balinese massage remains central, Empress has built a broad menu designed around different bodies, lifestyles and recovery needs. Treatments include Deep Tissue, Sports, Aromatherapy, Lymphatic Drainage, Post-Operative Lymphatic Massage, Maderotherapy, Hot Stone Massage, and Foot Massage with Reflexology, alongside targeted face, head and body work.

One offering stands apart. Empress combines Sound Healing with massage, bringing physical bodywork and deep relaxation together in a single experience not found on a conventional spa menu. Every session is personalized around preferred pressure, areas of concern and treatment goals: firmer, targeted work for an athlete, or a slower pace and careful positioning for a new mother. There is no fixed routine.

The home becomes the spa. The team arrives with everything required to transform a room into a professional treatment environment. There is no traffic, no parking, no waiting room, no drive home immediately after reaching deep relaxation. Couples can even be treated at the same time, making wellness something shared rather than scheduled separately.

Resilience That Defined the Brand

The Empress story has not been one of uninterrupted growth. After turning profitable in its second year, Empress faced a difficult period in the region. Demand slowed sharply, and the business went through six extremely hard months. Companies nearby reduced salaries, downsized or closed.

Amna made a conscious decision to protect her team. She stopped paying herself and personally funded the company to keep everyone employed. By the sixth month, she genuinely questioned whether Empress would survive. The team stayed together. As people returned to Dubai, the business began its climb back with the same therapists she had fought to protect.

"For me, success isn't just how quickly we grow," she says. "It's whether our clients trust us enough to keep coming back and whether the people who helped build Empress are still growing with us."

A Dubai-Grown Wellness Brand

Although its treatment heritage is rooted in Indonesia, Empress is a Dubai-grown business, shaped around the city's rhythm: ambitious professionals, young families and international residents who want premium services to come to them.

The company also brings its philosophy beyond the home. Corporate wellness offerings include seated chair massage, wellness activations and tailored experiences for offices and events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, from intimate executive sessions to larger employee gatherings.

Looking ahead, Empress aims to become the UAE's most recognized home-service Balinese massage brand and to open accessible physical locations. Amna also hopes to work alongside doulas, midwives and maternity professionals to promote a more holistic approach to pregnancy and postpartum wellness.

The philosophy, however, stays simple. The body does not have to reach breaking point before one makes time to care for it.
