Yet, this relentless chase for exceptionalism raises an important question: does the pursuit of greatness lead to genuine happiness, or does it result in increased anxiety and stress?

The Constantly Rising Bar

The expectation to achieve high standards starts early in life. Traditionally, being “average” was an acceptable benchmark. However, as children progress through school, they face escalating pressures to excel, often feeling that receiving top grades isn’t enough unless accompanied by additional accolades, leadership roles, and extensive extracurricular involvement. It is not unusual for students to experience burnout by the time they reach college or enter the workforce.

Social media intensifies this phenomenon. We are no longer mere spectators; we are prone to compare our untidy realities against others’ polished highlights. Observing peers who seemingly navigate effortless successes—such as launching startups or traveling the world—can lead to feelings of inadequacy, where the extraordinary becomes the new norm.

Even in personal relationships and self-image, we face societal pressure to embody perfection. There is a prevalent belief that unless we are constantly optimizing our existence, we are squandering our potential. This raises a crucial point: what if finding fulfillment doesn’t require a towering ambition but rather creating a space for tranquility and reflection in our lives?

Cherishing Everyday Dignity

Reframing our narrative around what constitutes a valuable life could be transformative. An “average” life—characterized by routine responsibilities, meaningful relationships, and simple pleasures—merits acknowledgment, not rejection. There is inherent dignity in daily life, even in the absence of recognition or accolades.

Consider the roles of educators, healthcare workers, transport providers, and service personnel. Their contributions often go unnoticed, yet they play pivotal roles in our communities. While their tasks may appear ordinary on the surface, the impact of their dedication is profound and far-reaching.

Being “average” does not equate to being uninspired. Rather, it is an acknowledgment of one’s life circumstances without the need for constant comparisons. Recognizing our humanity is integral to appreciating the extraordinary aspects of our existence.

The Hidden Downsides of Exceptionalism

The relentless pursuit of greatness can lead to mental health struggles, including stress and isolation. The pressure to achieve perfection can lead to a paralyzing sense of inadequacy, while constant comparisons can diminish our joy. Statistically, not everyone can be above average, yet society continues to perpetuate the myth that we all should be.

In many ways, the pursuit of success promotes a competitive mindset that ultimately fosters feelings of failure in those who do not reach the top. Life, however, is not a race, but a tapestry woven from numerous small joys, intimate experiences, and deep connections.

Redefining the Concept of a “Good Life”

In a culture that idolizes achievement, it takes courage to redefine what success means. Rejecting the hustle culture requires an understanding of the value of stability, depth, and reliability over acclaim and prestige.

A fulfilling life is built not on accolades or social media algorithms, but through meaningful conversations, established routines, shared meals, tranquil walks, acts of kindness, and the freedom to rest without guilt.

It is perfectly acceptable not to aspire to change the world dramatically; instead, we can focus on making subtle yet significant impacts within our immediate circles by being compassionate and present.
