Literal Lines Brings Apparel to Life With Bold, Unapologetic Storytelling. Transforms minimalist apparel into powerful, wearable narratives that spark connection and community.
It all started on the bathroom floor.
The hum of clippers, the smell of aftershave, and a notepad filled with crossed-out names. That’s where Kourtnie A. Robin, Founder and Creative Designer of Literal Lines., sat brainstorming with her husband. Hours in, names were tossed out like old laundry. Then, quiet. A question. “What do these lines really mean to us?”
Moments later, the name clicked. Literal Lines. Not just a brand name, but a truth. These weren’t just catchy phrases meant to look good on cotton. They were real words from real people, unfiltered, unpolished, and undeniably human.
And just like that, a brand was born.
Born From the Realest Parts of Life
Literal Lines didn’t start in a boardroom or from a Pinterest mood board. It started in the messy, complicated, deeply felt experiences of life.
In 2007, Kourtnie began noticing how much emotion could be packed into a single phrase, moments shared with friends, heartbreaks survived, joy unexpectedly found. Through the ups and downs of navigating career moves, family dynamics, love, and loss, she realized that some of the most unforgettable things ever said were things she or someone close to her had actually lived.
For years, she’d laugh or cringe in conversation and say, “That needs to go on a shirt.” But back then, her early idea, an apparel brand named Theory, never made it past the concept stage.
Still, the thought never left her.
It followed her into friendships, relationships, late-night text threads, and those “tf and you can’t be serious” moments. It kept whispering that maybe the most powerful form of connection didn’t need bells, whistles, or even color. Just bold typography, and a story to back it up.
The Breakthrough: Shirts With a Story
In 2020, sitting around with friends sharing the kind of stories that linger long after the laughter fades, Kourtnie had her breakthrough. What if each shirt came with a story card? A little piece of paper that revealed the real moment, memory, or emotion behind the phrase.
Not a quote. A confession.
And not someone else’s words, but something that actually happened, to her, to a friend, to anyone willing to share. That was the spark that brought Literal Lines. to life in 2021.
The vision was crystal clear: to create a line of apparel that honored the imperfect, unfiltered, beautifully human moments that make us who we are.
More Than Merch. A Movement.
At first glance, the tees are clean. Minimalist. Unisex. Black and white, bold fonts, simple phrases. But behind each design is something deeper.
“Find Out.”
“Time Is Precious.”
“Worthy.”
“Thankful.”
Each line carries weight. And each shirt comes with a Literal Story Card, offering insight into the person or moment behind the phrase. It might be about a hard-won lesson, a humbling fall, or a hilarious truth.
“We don’t sell sayings,” Kourtnie says. “We share real stories, unfiltered, unapologetic, and deeply human.”
That’s what sets Literal Lines. apart from other apparel brands. It’s not just fashion. It’s a storytelling platform disguised as a t-shirt line.

Why Literal Lines. Hits Different
In a world of slogan-saturated fashion, Literal Lines. stands out by doing less, but doing it intentionally.
Here’s how:
- Authenticity at the Core: Every phrase has a backstory rooted in real life, not trends.
- Conversation Starters: Each shirt invites the wearer, and the people who read it, to connect.
- Minimalist, Gender-Neutral Design: Clean, text-only looks that speak volumes without saying too much.
- Story Cards: A tangible reminder that we all carry stories, and those stories matter.
- Rooted in Community: Created by a Black woman founder from New Orleans, the brand uplifts diverse voices and lived experiences.
This isn’t just fashion for fashion’s sake. It’s a connection in cotton, designed to make you feel seen.
From Setbacks to Statements
Literal Lines. is also the story of resilience.
Like many entrepreneurs, Kourtnie faced the creative block, the fear, the “what if this flops?” voice in her head. The original brand idea stalled. Life got in the way. But she never let go of the core concept, because it was never about selling clothes. It was about telling the truth.
And now, that truth is resonating with others, too. Customers are wearing their stories proudly, sharing photos, and opening up about what a particular phrase means to them. The brand has become a space where humor, heartbreak, healing, and hype all live side by side.
The Shirt That Speaks for You
