Much has been written about success over the centuries, but in recent decades there has been even more emphasis on the subject. We strive to be smarter, stronger, faster, healthier, wealthier, and more accomplished. We want to connect more with others in more meaningful and fulfilling relationships.
With so much information on how to achieve success in books, the internet, and mass media, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and pulled in so many different directions. Focusing on achieving a specific goal can be a distraction in itself and get in the way of your greater journey to success.
However, there are some proven principles to help you achieve your goals and enjoy the journey to get there. One of them is “non-negotiable principles.”
Non-negotiables are actions that you absolutely must perform on a regular basis, regardless of the circumstances. No matter what goals you are trying to achieve in areas such as health, fitness, relationships, career, finances, spirituality, etc., you need to establish the non-negotiables.
Let me share some examples from my own life.
I separate the non-negotiables by day, week, and month. My daily non-negotiables are: 1) Spend at least a few minutes practicing stillness, such as meditating, walking, or immersing yourself in nature. 2) Refrain from checking email or social media after 7pm and instead spend time engaging meaningfully with your wife and children.
My weekly non-negotiables are: 1) do calisthenics at least 3 times, 2) do martial arts training at least 4 times, 3) write a blog post, and 4) make sure the sun is shining. Complete a dry fast while ascending, 5) Reach out to potential coaching clients, 6) Complete at least two language lessons (currently studying Chinese), 7) Read personal development books and Read article.
My monthly non-negotiables are: 1) Actively seek out speaking opportunities and 2) Reach out to like-minded people via email and social media to expand your network and the impact of your ideas. 3) Evaluate your current investments to see if they are appropriate. We’ll help you reach your financial goals, and if not, determine what needs to change in your portfolio. 4) Evaluate your monthly income to see how you can maximize it by working smarter.
In the most important areas of life, you have to have non-negotiables. They usually center around health and fitness, personal relationships and social life, career and finances. Without non-negotiables, no matter what you put your energy and attention into, you will struggle and be less likely to succeed.
Look at your own life now. What are the non-negotiables in the major areas of your life? If you don’t have any, think about how the lack of them is impacting your ability to achieve your goals.
For now, as mentioned above, divide your goals into general areas of life and come up with at least three non-negotiables for each. No matter what else happens in your life, make a commitment to stick to your non-negotiables. You’ll be surprised how simple practices like this can help you reach your goals faster and improve your life.
