Roots & Rhythms Stories brings joy and representation to young readers, celebrating culture through colorful, impactful narratives.
Angela Priso has always been a storyteller. As a child, she created imaginary classrooms where she taught make-believe students, captivated by the power of words. But it wasn’t until later in life—after becoming a mother and spending nearly two decades in pediatric medical imaging and cardiology—that Angela recognized her true calling: to write stories that affirm children’s identities, ignite curiosity, and celebrate rich cultural traditions. With God’s grace, that vision gave birth to Roots & Rhythms Stories—an initiative dedicated to helping children feel seen, heard, and valued.
A Story of Passion and Purpose
Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Angela’s roots run deep in both African American heritage and West African traditions. Growing up, she was keenly aware of the lack of representation in children’s literature. Books rarely reflected the vibrant, layered cultures she knew from her own life. Angela, with a heart full of dreams and an eye for detail, decided to change that. With the support of her husband, a native of Cameroon, and inspired by her global travels, Angela embarked on a mission to create children’s books that would close the representation gap she once felt herself.
For Angela, writing became more than creative expression—it became a form of advocacy, a way of ensuring that young readers, especially Black children, could see their beauty, culture, and possibilities reflected on the page.
Obstacles and Key Decisions
The journey wasn’t easy. Angela questioned whether her stories would resonate in a publishing world where representation was still inconsistent. But her faith, professional discipline, and love for children carried her forward.
As a mother, she knew firsthand the importance of instilling confidence in children. As a woman, she also understood the power of using her voice to shape narratives. This dual perspective pushed her to innovate beyond books, blending literature with original songs and videos on YouTube—transforming her stories into immersive experiences that children could see, hear, and feel. It was her dedication to representation and early childhood literacy that set Roots & Rhythms Stories apart from the rest.
A Global Perspective on Representation
Angela’s mission reached new heights when she appeared in an interview with Cheryl Burton on ABC7 Chicago, where she shared the importance of cultural representation in children’s literature. Her passion and authenticity resonated. She has also been featured in outlets such as Rolling Out, Heart&Soul, and Urban Arts.
Still, the most powerful feedback didn’t come from the media—it came from parents and educators who shared how her stories helped children embrace their identities with pride.
What Makes Roots & Rhythms Stories Unique Today
Today, Roots & Rhythms Stories stands out because it doesn’t center trauma or struggle. Instead, Angela’s books focus on joy, culture, and identity—celebrating Black children as explorers, dreamers, and leaders. By creating stories that reflect both African American and African traditions, Angela empowers children to imagine themselves boldly and joyfully in the world.
Books like Tutu and Her Little Big Moves exemplify her approach: stories alive with energy, expression, and the joy of being fully seen.
The Heart Behind the Stories
Angela credits her years in pediatric medical imaging and leadership for the discipline she brings to her writing. It is this blend of professional precision and heartfelt storytelling that makes Roots & Rhythms Stories so successful.
But she is quick to acknowledge her faith in this journey. She gives glory to God for the doors opened and the strength to walk through them. Each story is a reflection of His grace and the responsibility she carries to serve children.
When Angela isn’t writing, she can be found traveling, watching movies, or spending time with her husband and family. These simple joys nurture her creativity and keep her grounded.
At her core, Angela is a woman on a mission: to ensure that every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated. Her work is not only a gift to children but also a testament to the power of women using their voices to shape culture, identity, and joy.
