Reusable Makeup Towels Will Dramatically Upgrade Your Nighttime Routine

Whether it’s a team cleansing balm, foaming face wash, or gel cleanser, product selection isn’t the only factor to consider when washing your face. There are also options for the actual washing method. You can simply use your hands, use an old-fashioned washcloth, or opt for a reusable makeup towel. The latter in particular has been gaining popularity lately due to its extensive benefits (just kidding). “My favorite reasons to use reusable makeup towels/cloths are the convenience and travel-friendly factor,” says Steve Kassajikian of Urban Decay. Head of global art. “It helps reduce waste, is kinder to the skin, more hygienic and easier to pack.”

Curious about reusable makeup towels? From benefits to how to use them, we went straight to the pros to answer all your burning questions.

Steve Kassajikian is a makeup artist and Global Head of Artistry at Urban Decay. Dr. Marisa Gershick, FAAD, is a board-certified dermatologist with MDCS Dermatology based in New York City and New Jersey. Tammy Fender is an esthetician, clean beauty pioneer, and founder of her eponymous skincare brand, Tammy Fender Holistic Skincare.

What is a reusable makeup towel?

“A sustainable alternative to disposable makeup wipes and cotton pads (reusable makeup towels) are designed to gently remove makeup, dirt, and oil from the skin using water or a cleanser.” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Gershick. Faad. Unlike disposable wipes, these towels are used just like towels, in conjunction with your favorite cleanser (although they’re specifically designed to remove makeup).

Another advantage of reusable makeup towels is their size. “Reusable makeup towels are smaller than towels, but just as useful for cleansing your face and removing makeup,” says the brand’s founder, esthetician and clean beauty pioneer. Tammy Fender says.

How to use reusable makeup towels

Even if you use reusable makeup towels, you still have several face-washing methods at your disposal. “I like to cleanse my face with my fingertips, rubbing a natural cream cleanser into my skin, then wiping it off with a warm, damp makeup towel,” says Fender.

Garshick offers an alternative method. “Moisten a cloth with warm water or apply your favorite cleanser. Gently wipe your skin in circular motions to remove makeup, sunscreen, and buildup,” she says. “When you’re done washing, rinse thoroughly with water and hang to dry.” Meanwhile, Kasajikian recommends applying your favorite makeup remover to a cloth and gently gliding it over your face.

advantage

If you’re conscious of the environmental impact of your skin care, or simply want to achieve a gentler, more effective routine, reusable makeup towels have several perks. Some are:

You may be able to remove makeup more effectively. If you’ve ever felt like your daily routine isn’t getting your skin as clean as you want, a reusable makeup towel might be just the upgrade you need. “Choosing a soft, natural-fiber cloth to dry your skin after cleansing can really help remove any residue before applying toner, serum, or moisturizer,” says Fender. Lower environmental impact than other options: “At the same time, it also offers a way to bring a little environmental awareness into your daily life,” says Fender. The eco-perspective is important. If you’re always drawn to disposable makeup wipes and cotton pads, think about how much you can save in the process.
SKIN-FRIENDLY: Reusable makeup towels can also be helpful if you find other options too irritating or if you want to achieve a more soothing complexion. “It’s designed with soft fibers that minimize irritation and are suitable for sensitive skin,” says Gershick.

Other considerations

Reusable makeup towels are useful in many ways, but each product has its pros and cons. Before we get started, let’s take a look at some factors to keep in mind when considering adding one to your routine.

Wash regularly: One of the main drawbacks of makeup remover towels is keeping them clean. This is important, but they require more maintenance than disposable products. “If you don’t clean them properly after each use, bacteria can grow and cause skin irritation and breakouts,” says Gershick. “Hand wash your reusable cloths with a gentle detergent or wash them in the washing machine after each use.” Replace as needed: Reusable makeup towels don’t last forever. Please note that it is not. “Be careful, as some cosmetics can stain fabrics,” Kasazikian says. “If it tears, frays, or starts to smell even after washing, replace it.” Garshick says frequent washing over a long period of time can reduce the effectiveness of the fabric, so replace it as it wears. It adds that you should consider replacing your towels every six months.

Type selection

When purchasing reusable makeup towels, you have several options. Garshick divides them into three categories. “Microfiber cloths are known for their super soft texture and ability to remove makeup with just water,” she says. “Bamboo fiber cloth is sustainable and has natural antibacterial properties, making it ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. One side of the double-sided cloth is for makeup removal, and the other side is for gentle exfoliation.”

All of the above are solid options to choose from depending on your goals, but our experts offer some tips to keep in mind. “We recommend fabrics with natural fibers, such as bamboo or cotton. Avoid synthetic fibers or harsh or abrasive fabrics,” says Fender.

last point

Reusable makeup towels may require some extra TLC, but they’re good enough because they’re gentle on the skin, help remove stubborn residue, and have a lower environmental impact than disposable towels. It has great value. “Keeping your laundry updated is a great way to incorporate a mix of old-fashioned and contemporary self-care into your daily routine,” says Fender.
