It is expected that a new nail trend cycle will be born for winter, with a lineup of gorgeous colors and nail art. I admit that. No matter how cute, holiday nail art can sometimes feel a little on the nose (and difficult to recreate), especially against the gorgeous neutral shades that were so popular throughout fall. That said, the latest nail polish color trends that are about to take over are equal parts festive and chic (and delicious enough to be eaten). Enter “gingerbread” nails.
The latest in the chocolate brown nail trend that’s been trending throughout the cooler months, gingerbread nails look as delicious as they sound. The warm, cinnamon-spiced color is the perfect everyday neutral (no nail art skills required) and will give you that much-needed holiday boost. Is this the best part? You can still wear it until January. We’ll explain everything you need to know about gingerbread nails and how to get that look.
trend
In early October, creator Jackie Alexander soft-launched the trend by posting a TikTok of her new nail polish. The video currently has around 500,000 views, and its creators named it “Gingerbread Nails” after the soft brown color they created at the salon. Rather than opting for a true chocolate brown shade, Alexander’s custom shade starts with a warm pinky base, covers that base with another amber-toned polish, and finishes with a chrome top coat. result? A spicy brown color similar to the color of gingerbread cookies.
Alexander may have coined the term, but brown nails have been repeated here and there (literally, everywhere) throughout fall. Selena Gomez tried a bright ‘Toffee’ color, Hailey Bieber co-signed a chocolate caramel shade and an amber shade, and ‘Moscow Mule’ nails added a copper twist to the shade. It’s no surprise that it evolved into a specific trend for the holiday season, and the warm-toned gingerbread shade is perfect. Even without reinventing the wheel, it still feels new and is extremely wearable and versatile.
How to get the look
Alexander didn’t reveal exactly what color she ordered at the salon, but in the video it appears her manicurist mixed up a custom brown. However, the highlight of this trend is that there is no specific formula. To get the most realistic gingerbread color, just choose a light, warm brown shade with orange undertones. Like other trending shades, it can be used alone or in some classic styles like French manicures and abstract swirls. Nail artist Tiffany Minifie combined the shades in a French style with milky white swirls reminiscent of milk and cookies. You can also top it with chrome like Alexander or any kind of shimmering top coat for added shine.
As for polish recommendations, Peacci’s Woody Polish offers a pretty warm brown, similar to Chanel’s Les Vernis Spirituel shade. OPI’s My Italian Is a Little Rusty is another great option.
