My Review Of Sephora's Newest Black Owned Makeup Brand, Range Beauty

Sephora is ending the year by expanding its brand lineup. Founded by Alicia Scott, Range Beauty is the latest Black-owned makeup brand to join the retailer. Scott launched the brand in 2018 after a lifelong battle with acne- and eczema-prone skin. Her brand has carved out a space to offer comprehensive cosmetics, from foundations to primers to powders, that are gentle enough for those with reactive skin.

Over the past six years, Scott has steadily grown Range Beauty, securing several grants and investments along the way (famous entrepreneur Emma Grede is one of the brand’s investors). The brand’s debut at Sephora is a grand culmination of Scott’s efforts thus far. Range Beauty’s new partnership with Sephora comes after Scott joined the retailer’s Accelerate program last year.

“I tell any founder who will listen to get involved in as many accelerator programs as possible,” Scott says. “Going behind the scenes at Sephora and getting that one-on-one attention was a great experience. You learn not only how to succeed at Sephora, but also how to succeed as a global beauty brand. Seeing it all come to fruition is now beyond breaking point.” Further validation from a large company like Sephora drives home that Range Beauty’s mission is important, necessary, and valuable. Range Beauty currently offers four products formulated with dermatologist-backed, clinically proven ingredients that soothe and nourish the skin. These include True Intentions Hydrating Primer, made with vitamin E and sodium PCA, and True Intentions Hydrating Foundation, which comes in 21 shades with ingredients like calendula and green tea. The brand also offers Smooth Out Translucent Powder, which is talc-free and comes in four colors, and Bali Face & Body Glow, which is argan oil-based.

With the brand’s entire selection now available on Sephora’s website, Scott hopes to reach as many beauty consumers as possible and positively impact their makeup habits and confidence. “Within the next five years, I dream of becoming a household name in the beauty industry. We want to be recognized as a brand. At the end of the day, what I’m most happy about is testimonials that say how much we’ve impacted their lives. But our audience speaks to us and says, “I feel noticed by your brand,” or “Thank you for making this for me.” I want that impact to continue, and with this partnership with Sephora, we can now make that impact on an even bigger scale. ”

my review

Range Beauty is a brand I’ve had my eye on since I interned at Byrdie five years ago, and I’ve tried several of their products over the years. Shortly after Sephora’s announcement, the brand sent me a restock email so I could dip into Range Beauty products again. I don’t currently suffer from eczema or acne, but I do have extremely dry skin, so this brand’s soothing formula is exactly what I need for fall and winter.

I like primers that extend the longevity of my makeup and provide rich, intense hydration. True Intentions Hydrating Primer meets both requirements. After applying generously, my skin feels plump, protected, and hydrated. It also makes my skin glow, so I sometimes apply it without applying foundation.

For the True Intentions Hydrating Foundation, I wear the “Baked” shade. Whether you use a sponge or brush, this formula is easy to blend and provides great coverage in one swipe. However, it’s easy to layer this foundation to medium coverage and it doesn’t look cakey. Like the primer, this foundation reduces dryness on my skin and is very lightweight. Most importantly, the foundation stays on all day long and doesn’t look uneven.

To set the T-zone and under-eye area, use Smooth Out Translucent Powder in the shade ‘Medium’. This setting powder has a smooth, buttery texture and unlike others I’ve used, it’s not drying in the slightest. It also doesn’t settle fine lines or improve texture. When applied to the skin, it gives a blurred look and completely eliminates shine.

Bali Face & Body Glow is the perfect product to complete your collection as it helps enhance your glow from head to toe. I use this oil in a variety of ways, including mixing it with foundation and applying it to my bare skin (décolletage). Either way, it is incredibly moisturizing to my skin and super boosts hydration.
