If there’s one thing Hannah Montana taught me, it’s that hair is a powerful tool for reinvention. Miley Cyrus herself knows this all too well. We all remember where we were when Cyrus debuted her rebellious pixie buzz cut in 2013. And who can forget her ’70s-inspired blowout at the 2024 Grammy Awards? Tonight, Cyrus, who was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards for her song “The Last Showgirl,” underwent yet another transformation.
This time, she channeled rockstar chic in a messy bun with contrasting highlights and blunt bangs. A perfect balance of chaos and sophistication, Miley’s hair is reminiscent of ’90s Pamela Anderson with a grunge twist. The pop star’s statement updo was the perfect way to tie in her effortlessly edgy look, which featured a custom plunging Celine dress with sparkling cutouts. What about the cherry blossoms above? From head to toe, Cyrus’ look is the epitome of chic, woke-up confidence. Bob Lecine, Birdie’s longtime hairstylist, said the inspiration for the hair was “a cross between Debbie Harry and a Japanese cartoon character.” Essentially, it’s edgy but not trying too hard. “We wanted something that was perfect for this dress, but not something that looked ‘done,'” he added. “She wanted to feel cool and chic. No jewelry, just sunglasses, giving off a confident vibe.”
To get the look, Recine first applied Nexxus Prep and Protect Heat Defense Spray to damp hair, then blow-dried it with a flat bristle brush. I then used Nexxus Epic Shine anti-moisture spray to give it a glossy shine. He then twisted her hair up with pins and pulled out a few strands to “keep it from looking too finished.” To seal in the look, Recine applied Nexxus XXL Volume Medium Hold Hairspray and topped it off with Nexxus Repair and Nourish Ultra Lightweight Hair Oil.

Glamor-wise, Cyrus didn’t shy away from drama, opting for an Amy Winehouse-esque smoky cat eye and glossy peach lip combo. “To finish everything off before she walked the carpet, I added a generous amount of XXL Volume Medium Hold Hairspray to give her a sexy, tousled, confident look that lasted all night long,” Lecine says.
