Editor’s note: It’s been a big year for Marc Jacobs. Marc Jacobs celebrates 40 years in the fashion world by becoming American Vogue’s first guest editor. We conclude 2024 with an archival look back at the designer’s career. This Fall 1999 collection, presented in Soho on February 15, 1999, has been digitized as part of Vogue Runway’s ongoing efforts to document the history of fashion shows.
A muted palette of browns, grays, and lavender was perfect for Marc Jacobs’ subdued fall 1999 vibe. One of the collection’s highlights were chunky knits, including hoodie-style cardigans, pullovers, and floor-covering striped scarves. The tailoring had subtle references to military and western wear (there was even a cow-print skirt), and the dressy numbers seemed somehow understated. The apron-like dresses, empire-waist frocks, and Hester Prynne-esque capelet gave the Independent’s Melanie Rickey a vibe that was described as “prairie chic meets rustic street street.”
