What If the Parts We Hide Are What Connect Us?

Avalon Reina Grey believes the stories we conceal may be the ones that bring us closest together.

Most of us spend a lifetime trying to be enough. We polish our public selves, highlight our successes, and quietly fold away the doubts, losses, and contradictions we fear might make us less acceptable to others. Avalon Reina Grey is fascinated by exactly those hidden things. For her, the experiences we rarely speak about aloud are often the ones that could help us finally understand one another.

The Writer Beneath the Work

Long before Grey became an entrepreneur or the founder of Peony Magazine, she was a writer. From an early age, she turned to the written word as a private space to explore emotions that were not always easy to say aloud. Writing became a way to question, to process, and to give shape to feelings that might otherwise have remained unspoken.

"I'm not interested in defining people by what they've accomplished," she says. "I'm interested in what they've lived. The things that shaped them, the things that challenged them, the things they may never have spoken about. That's where I believe some of the most meaningful stories begin."

That instinct still guides everything she creates. Grey's writing often ventures into introspective, darker, and occasionally taboo territory, examining the contradictions of the soul and the shadows beneath outward appearances. She does not look away from the uncomfortable. She believes meaningful understanding frequently begins there.

A Creative Life Shaped by Expression

Grey's relationship with creativity has always extended beyond the page. Of Serbian and Peruvian descent, she grew up between places, learning adaptability and independence early. Those qualities would become quiet strengths rather than lasting burdens.

Her artistic background is broad. She studied and performed opera for approximately fourteen years, performed in a rock band, and pursued modeling through Stars Talent Studio, a Utah-based talent agency led by longtime industry professional Amber Evans. Each of these pursuits took a different form, yet all were connected by the same fascination: expression, emotion, and the power of creativity to leave a lasting impression.

Her later path led into branding, marketing, digital publishing, and technology, including the development of applications and digital platforms. She once grew an online community to more than 160,000 members within a few months. Yet Grey is clear that these ventures were never the point in themselves. What fulfilled her most was not building something successful, but knowing that what she created could serve a meaningful purpose in someone else's life.

Beneath the Surface, A Shared Language

Society often separates people through visible distinctions: wealth, recognition, education, profession. Grey believes those external markers reveal very little about anyone's inner life.

"We spend so much time separating people by what they have, what they do, or how the world sees them," she reflects. "But none of those things makes someone immune to loneliness, grief, fear, or the desire to be loved. Beneath all those differences, there's so much we recognize in one another."

A mother raising a family, a professional questioning the direction of their life, an artist searching for words that will not come, someone quietly rebuilding after loss. On the surface, they share little. Beneath it, they often share everything: the fear of not being enough, the hope of belonging, the courage to begin again.

"An ordinary life can hold an extraordinary story," Grey adds. "You don't have to be famous, wealthy, or celebrated to have experienced something that could change the way another person sees the world."

Peony Magazine: A Home for Unspoken Truths

Peony Magazine is where this philosophy takes form. Grey founded the independent editorial platform as a space for the subjects people often struggle to speak about openly: raw emotions, uncomfortable truths, complicated relationships, and the parts of ourselves we conceal out of fear of judgment.

As Peony developed, its vision expanded. Grey realized that not every story is best told through an article, and not every experience can be captured in straightforward language. So the publication grew to embrace poetry, fiction, nonfiction, personal essays, photography, visual storytelling, and conversations with creators across fields such as gaming and entertainment.

"A story does not have to be factual to reveal an emotional truth," she notes. Each medium offers its own language, and each can reach someone in a way another cannot.

What distinguishes Peony is not simply the variety of work it welcomes, but the intention connecting it all. The magazine seeks out writers, artists, innovators, and visionaries whose work carries meaning beyond recognition, as well as individuals who hold no public profile yet carry experiences worth sharing. Through interviews, features, and creative collaborations, Peony aims to create an exchange where creators gain visibility for work they believe in and readers discover understanding, encouragement, or a new way of seeing the world.

Although the publication originated from a distinctly feminine creative perspective, its vision reaches far beyond that. Peony welcomes diverse voices, recognizing that the questions shaping our lives often transcend gender, culture, profession, and background.

Connection in a Disconnected Age

At the heart of Peony is a concern that feels especially relevant today: the growing distance between technological connectivity and genuine human connection. People can communicate instantly across continents, yet many still struggle with loneliness and the quiet belief that no one truly understands them.

Grey does not see this as a problem invented by technology. She sees it as a contemporary expression of needs that have existed throughout history. Peony embraces the opportunities that emerging mediums provide while remaining devoted to a deeper purpose: helping people understand themselves and one another.

The publication does not limit itself to difficult subjects alone. Beauty, imagination, humor, and the celebration of meaningful accomplishments can be equally powerful ways to bring people together. Peony embraces the full spectrum of expression because it reflects the full spectrum of the people behind it.

A Legacy Worth Leaving

Grey is also writing a transformational nonfiction book, planned for publication in 2027, which further explores identity, authenticity, personal freedom, and the wisdom found in life's more difficult chapters.

Her ambitions, however, reach beyond any single book or publication. She hopes to build a lasting creative legacy, something that continues to provoke thought and offer perspective long after her own chapter has ended.

"I want to create things that outlive the moment they were made," she says. "Something that stays with a person, changes a perspective, or gives someone a little more understanding than they had before."

For Grey, the greatest potential of storytelling lies in what happens after a story is shared: when someone feels less alone, discovers a new perspective, or carries something forward into another life.
