Over the years, this sartorial balancing act has been mastered by certified street style icon Katie Holmes. Holmes often reaches for chic, elevated basics to form the basis of her looks, but she’s never afraid to add a whimsical and unexpected twist. For example, just before Christmas, Holmes sported a brown and red look, teaming it with a red pageboy hat and extra baggy pants. Later that week, she wore the same hat and pants, along with a stylish long black coat. And then there was the time I paired simple jeans with a festive red velvet Mary Jane. Or when you add an unexpected touch to a simple black coat with a shiny waist belt.
Holmes’ latest look is another masterclass in blending the tried-and-true classic sartorial with surprising, even contrasting elements. On Boxing Day, she was spotted strolling around New York City wearing the coziest brown wool coat. She wrapped her oversized coat like a blanket and paired it with a simple gray wool sweater, long baggy jeans, black leather loafers and a black bag. She completed her off-duty look with a messy bun and oversized brown sunglasses.

But the real star of this look came in the unexpected form of her trusty tote. In addition to her black handbag, Holmes carried additional essentials in a bag that resembled a Hello Kitty bag. Because of course she did. Did the bright green, blue, and red Baggu bag “suit” her chic, quiet luxury? Strictly speaking, it wasn’t. But then again, maybe it really was the perfect, practical, and lively finishing touch to her look.

Holmes was currently on her way to the Barrymore Theater where she is playing Mrs. Webb in a revival of Thornton Wilder’s “My Town” with Jim Parsons and Zoey Deutch. Holmes and the rest of the cast took some time off from performing over the holidays.
Holmes recently told InStyle during an Ann Taylor event, “I love being in New York, and it’s actually really exciting to be able to perform in a Broadway show during the holidays.” “Experiencing different audiences and people who travel to come to this city is just exciting for them, so I’m really looking forward to it. We’ve got some great audiences around Thanksgiving, and we’re going to have a lot of people who are strangers.” It’s wonderful to share the holidays with others. Christmas in New York is always magical, and I love it.”
