Duchess Kate supports her husband Prince William with every outfit.
The Princess of Wales has always cycled through her outfits (she’s the reason the term “royal rewear” exists), but according to The Telegraph’s fashion director Bethan Holt, her latest styling hack is inspired by William. In honor of his work, we’re taking that concept a step further.
“One of the accessories she kept adding last year was ribbons, which really transformed previous outfits into something completely different,” Holt told People of Middleton. The author added: “I think bows are a bit of a perennial in many ways, but there’s definitely a bow trend at the moment and she’s doing it in her own way.”
First, Princess Kate chose a white Jenny Packham dress with black trim for this year’s Trooping the Color parade, which she previously wore to the pre-coronation lunch last May. A striped statement ribbon completely transformed the look. A few months later, she attended Remembrance Sunday wearing the black Catherine Walker coat dress she had previously worn, with a velvet coquette cord detail added to the collar. And a few weeks later, she added the same removable tie to her favorite red Alexander McQueen coat at the annual “Together at Christmas” concert.
“I think she’s trying a more sustainable way of dressing. She already has a vast and eclectic wardrobe, so shouldn’t she be looking for ways to take existing pieces and reimagine them? ” Holt explained. “And bowing is a very democratic and universal way to do that.”
Holt continued: “I think this also speaks to William’s message about sustainability and his Earthshot project. He went to South Africa and made a big statement by wearing sustainable clothes. But this is a very relatable way to send the same message: wear what you already own and add one little thing to change up your look.
Sustainability aside, Holt also said Middleton’s obsession with his new bow could be a sign that he’s getting back to his old self after a difficult year. “For obvious reasons, we didn’t see much of her, but in the few appearances we did see, she was really back to being the real Kate. It’s a feeling of being there,” she added.
