In celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor the transformative legacy of H.E. Amb. Dr. Shirley Edokpa a Nigerian American. She stands among the most influential African women on the global stage. A woman of remarkable resilience and vision, Her unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes continues to inspire generations to lead with courage, compassion, and integrity.
Her dedication to empowering underserved communities has earned her the titles of Ambassador of Peace and Mother of Nations. She has championed the rights of marginalized populations, advocating for justice, equality, and social reform. Her journey stands as a testament to the profound impact of a leader driven by love for humanity and an unyielding commitment to justice. Her advocacy work has been strengthened by World Leaders.
As an ordained Woman of God, faith is the foundation of Dr. Edokpa’s humanitarian mission. Her influence spans globally recognized organizations, including UNICEF CAT, the American Red Cross, and the CDC. She has also served at the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State House, a former White House Correspondent with SEF, tirelessly advocating for vulnerable communities and confronting adversity with unparalleled courage and determination.
Her career has been defined by leadership in times of crisis. She served as Regional Project Manager, Service to the Armed Forces at the American Red Cross and held key roles in VAVS and government operations. In both capacities, she provided critical assistance and advocacy.
Dr. Edokpa draws on an impressive academic background—including studies at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Massachusetts (Gender, Leadership, and Public Policy), and Lagos State University (Economics). This education empowered her to navigate crises with a rare blend of compassion and pragmatic leadership.
Her work extends beyond immediate relief efforts; she is a relentless advocate for systemic reforms that address the root causes of inequality. She has championed prison reform, legal reform, and human rights protections, while emphasizing civilian protection and adherence to International Humanitarian Law, including her remarkable clemency efforts in Nigeria.
She is a member of the American Bar Association Senior Lawyers Division Women of Excellence Committee, as well as several other national and international committees within the ABA. Dr. Edokpa was instrumental during global health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic, a faceless war from the outset, working tirelessly to curb the surge and ultimately bending the curve as she put smiles on the faces of people in the midst of crisis, also Ebola. She has received honorary doctorates in Law and Interfaith Social Justice (LL.D), as well as a Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH), among numerous other global honors. Her diplomatic efforts in conflict zones—such as a 15-month advocacy campaign for peaceful solutions, hostage release, and a ceasefire during the Israel-Hamas conflict—underscore her unwavering belief in dialogue and diplomacy as catalysts for lasting peace.
As the Founder and CEO of the Shirley Ehi Foundation, Dr. Edokpa has built a powerful platform that amplifies her advocacy for social justice, peace, and empowerment. The foundation is dedicated to uplifting underserved communities and ensuring that children have access to education and opportunities that pave the way for a brighter, conflict-free future — most notably through her initiative, One Student, One Resource.
At the heart of her mission is her guiding mantra: “Peace, Be Still.” Rooted in her faith, this belief inspires her relentless pursuit of justice, even in the face of adversity across nations.
Her advocacy marked a historic intervention, as she championed the rights of 48,000 Nigerian inmates in one instance—calling for case-by-case evaluations to correct over-sentencing, reduce overcrowding, and address wrongful convictions. A fierce advocate for gender equality, she has worked tirelessly to combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) through prevention and response initiatives—ensuring the protection and dignity of women and girls.
Dr. Edokpa’s impact transcends borders. Through her platform, she has championed humanitarian causes across the United States, Nigeria, Gambia, Congo, Sudan, Syria, Haiti, Zimbabwe and beyond. Her unwavering commitment to diplomacy was evident in her appeals during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, where she advocated for peaceful solutions amid global tensions.
She voiced concern over the reconfiguration of the African Union’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), asserting that any fragmentation of the department would create inefficiencies, undermine the continent’s unified response to pressing challenges, and weaken the African Union’s influence on the global stage. Most recently, she has appealed for U.S. support and the strengthening of International partnerships in alignment with the mission of the United Nations worldwide.
We stand in awe of Dr. Shirley Edokpa’s unwavering dedication to humanity. A visionary leader, compassionate humanitarian, and steadfast peace advocate—her impact will continue to inspire future generations.
Dr. Edokpa’s leadership exemplifies a legacy rooted in faith, love, and an enduring commitment to building a more just and peaceful world. Her work has made an immeasurable impact, and her influence will continue to resonate for years to come — as she is only just beginning.
