We all know that tough times are hard to navigate. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the heartache of a failed IVF journey, or the impact of losing a job, life’s challenges can feel overwhelming. But in the midst of these struggles, there’s hope. Through thoughtful conversations, expert guidance, and moments of humor, Ella Podcasts helps listeners unpack their emotional burdens and move forward with resilience.
Created and hosted by Ella Sherman, a Human Resources professional and passionate advocate for mental wellbeing, Ella Podcasts dives deep into the human experiences of loss, grief, anxiety, and the stress that comes with major life changes. But what sets this podcast apart is its unique combination of authentic true storytelling and expert therapeutic advice from Dr. Jonathan Marshall, a leading clinical psychologist and former professor of psychology, with the addition of one or two special guests each episode. Harmoniously together, they create an open space for listeners going through tough times to feel heard, supported, and empowered. Ella and Jonathan have a special rapport which is charismatic.
A Journey from Challenging Times to Public Service
Ella Sherman’s journey from working in a busy Human Resources department dealing with people’s issues on a daily basis, to creating Ella Podcasts, wasn’t born from a desire to simply educate or entertain. It was born from authentic empathy and a deep connection to the struggles people face every day. “Like everybody, I’ve been through my own tough times, and I know how isolating it can feel. Struggling alone is hard.” Ella shares. “I wanted to create a platform, a safe space, where listeners feel less alone while taking away useful coping tools to move forward with resilience. Knowing that these podcasts, free for everyone, are helping people pick up the pieces and get on with their lives is the reason for doing this. I’m very fortunate to have the amazing Dr Jonathan Marshall co-hosting every episode, as he’s a top psychologist and communicates in such a warm and lovely manner. It’s sensitive and constructive advice.”
Listeners are responding to the raw and real episodes, and find not just a voice they can relate to, but also a wealth of actionable tools for overcoming life’s most debilitating times. Each episode focuses on a different theme, exploring the emotional complexities behind topics such as pet bereavement, job loss, IVF failure, loneliness, workplace sexual harassment and toxic relationships at home.
Standout episodes include delving into the unique emotional weight of IVF failure and failing to become a mother. Ella points out “This is a subject which is often swept under the carpet and not talked openly about. You hear the success stories, but not about the failures and the devastation of giving up on the dream of motherhood.” Then there’s pet bereavement. “Losing a pet feels like losing a very much loved family member,” Ella explains. “We don’t always talk about the depth of that grief, but it’s real, and it deserves attention.” Dr. Jonathan Marshall offers professional insights on coping with immense disappointment, loss and grief, while special guests share their personal experiences, making the conversations both relatable and therapeutic.
Confronting Life’s Challenges with Expert Advice
Ella’s inclusion of Dr. Jonathan Marshall in every episode is a key component of the podcast’s success. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Marshall brings a wealth of knowledge and credibility to the show, offering listeners actionable strategies for mental well-being. His expertise gives the podcast a level of authenticity and depth that many other shows lack. Ella understood when producing the show the need to balance emotions and true cases with professional help and practical tips.
Ella Podcasts doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable or difficult topics that other shows might avoid. In fact, its willingness to tackle hard subjects head-on is one of the main reasons it stands out. Ella explains “There are so many glossy, happy, ‘living the dream’ podcasts out there with perfect looking people talking about their perfect looking families and perfect looking lives. I felt the need to tackle the tough subjects, which may seem rather depressing to some, but ultimately helps people, which is my goal. I focus on honest conversations that speak to the heart of life’s emotional turmoil.
“I’ve always believed in the power of communication,” Ella says. “When we can talk about our struggles openly, we find a way to keep going. Bottling up sad emotions isn’t healthy. While pain doesn’t necessarily heal, it can be managed. We can put sad life events into perspective and find meaningful ways to get on with our lives.”
