The Barry Show: A Fusion of Swiss Tradition and Modern Expression

Taking center stage at the Milan Fashion Week, the Barry Show unfolded on the 17th floor of the Torre Verasca, a modern skyscraper recently updated to offer breathtaking city views. The event, which attracted approximately 100 guests, was orchestrated by Creative Director Simone Belotti, who has revitalized the brand’s reputation in the fashion industry.

A Reflective Approach to Performance

Belotti’s concept for the show draws inspiration from the German terms “Leistung” and “Aufführung.” “Leistung” relates to performance through work and productivity, while “Aufführung” denotes performance as a means of self-expression. Belotti’s vision was illustrated through a mood board featuring archival black-and-white photographs from the 1950s that captured Barry employees experiencing the joy of their work.

Design Elements and Inspirations

The show displayed an intriguing juxtaposition of design elements, notably through the use of plain cotton totes adorned with delicate floral prints, carried by models dressed in structured suiting made from thick gray felt. This striking combination exemplified Belotti’s innovative approach to traditional Swiss clothing aesthetics.

Exploring Duality in Swiss Culture

Belotti’s mood board included not only nostalgic imagery but also hinted at deeper cultural narratives by featuring an image of animal fur alongside a photographic homage to Swiss performer Luciano Castelli from the 1970s. This interplay of freedom and restraint reflects the complexities of Swiss identity, balancing the beauty of the landscape with the hidden depths of emotional expression.

Crafting a Unique Collection

The collection showcased a seamless integration of structure and fluidity. Tailored pieces were accentuated with dynamic details, such as fur accents and crinoline elements, creating an expressive dialogue between elegance and audacity. “I long for discipline, but breaking routines is liberating,” Berotti expressed, emphasizing his desire to push creative boundaries.

Innovative Fashion Statements

Hourglass silhouettes made from materials like organza and leather featured distinct round inserts, reminiscent of the desks occupied by Barry employees. This reference created a unique narrative connection between the fashion on display and everyday life.

Highlighting Castelli’s Influence

Castelli, who attended the show, inspired pieces that included dazzling sequin drag outfits, such as an extravagant beret, a sleeveless top, and a dramatically large balloon skirt juxtaposed against structured silhouettes. The models’ makeup added to the contrast, enhancing the overall visual impact of the designs.

Conclusion: A Vision for the Future

Belotti seeks to embrace instinct in his creative process at Barry, aspiring to liberate fashion from conventional constraints. His bold vision pays homage to the rich tapestry of Swiss culture while simultaneously redefining it through innovative design.
