Yuhan Wang’s Spring 2025 Collection: A Fusion of Victorian Sportswear and Modern Functionality
Inspired by Historical Sportswear
This year, Yuhan Wang has pivoted from her previous boxing-themed collection to focus on the realm of ice hockey. However, her approach is not limited to the contemporary iteration of the sport; instead, she draws inspiration from the Victorian era, envisioning a sportswoman dressed in a tailored jacket combined with a flowing maxi skirt. In her own words, Wang aims to infuse “this kind of energy into the context of modern sportswear, both functional and romantic.”
Key Highlights of the Collection
- Padded herringbone jackets paired with ruffled tops, showcasing a blend of contemporary style and historical references.
- Frill bloomers reminiscent of iconic sports figures from the ’80s and ’90s, such as Angela James and Cammi Granato.
- A distinct emphasis on contrasting textures, including:
- A red interlucia sweater layered over lace socks.
- A shaggy faux fur coat worn over layered bases.
- Puffed nylon boxing shorts.
Innovative Use of Materials
Wang is renowned for her creative approach to lace, which featured prominently in this collection. This season, it emerged in unexpected forms, including as decorative trim on technical garments and in a patchwork polo shirt crafted from deadstock material. The latter piece is expected to resonate with her celebrity clientele, notably the members of BlackPink: Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa.
A Shift in Sportswear Perspective
While Wang’s Spring 2025 collection embraces a variety of style references, it strikes a more refined balance within the sportswear category. “No one really asked how women want to dress in sportswear. It’s mostly in the form of men,” Wang remarked, highlighting the need for inclusive and female-centric designs. Although her creations may not be practical for playing ice hockey, they represent a refreshing departure from traditional athletic apparel that has long dominated the market.
