For fall, Apiece Apart designers Starr Hout and Laura Cramer looked to the streets of New York City for inspiration. The pair found inspiration in the shapes and colors worn by women around the studio, finding creativity in effortless silhouettes and sophisticated combinations. “What we like is seeing our clothes in nature,” says Kramer. “If we can’t imagine the streets and the women of New York, it doesn’t mean anything to us.”
Apiece Apart is built on modern wardrobe staples. Rather than reinventing the wheel each season, Kramer and Haught focus on updating core silhouettes, like a great wool coat or the perfect barrel-shaped jeans, and offering them in new treatments. I’m leaving it there. This season, the earthy color palette with pops of moss, merlot, black and denim was inspired by Cecily Brown’s recent show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “She is one of our strong female muses,” Haught said. The play of color can be seen in a cherry red crew neck sweater paired with khaki brown tapered pants, or a billowing maxi dress with a tritone floral print.
Designers also focused on items that can be worn in a variety of ways. For example, a buttoned cardigan is styled asymmetrically and off-kilter, like a cozy shrug, and can be dressed up in the evening with loose black dress pants. The same goes for the super long beige sweater, which can be worn as a dress or layered over chic cigarette pants. “We’re always thinking of ways to stretch clothes so they can be worn from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.,” Hout says, “exploiting new shapes, ideas and tensions between proportions.” he said. The result is clothing that you can actually wear and live with. This is the type of investment item that can get you out of bed and still look well-worn, and no one would be wiser than this.
