In preparation for his latest fall collection, designer Ramin Badian Kouyate reflected on the inspirational journey behind his designs. “I’ve even returned to my parents and all the education and African sources I’ve taken from them,” shared the Mari-born designer. He emphasizes the importance of recycling, inspired by the resourcefulness of his childhood surroundings, where discarding items is not common. This ethos significantly shaped his creative process, aiming to merge the past with the future.

A Diverse Fusion of Styles

Kouyate’s extensive collection serves as a showcase of his signature elements, integrating various fabrics and styles. Key pieces include:

• Fur accents
• Silkscreen denim
• Upcycled sports jerseys
• Traditional wax prints

The introduction of knitwear marks a notable evolution in this collection, featuring oversized knitting techniques using scrap fabric. Highlights include a delicate lace skirt and a versatile scarf-turned-dress (Look 47). However, some tunics, although stylish, present a heavier feel, showcasing the duality of Kouyate’s experimentation with materials.

Notably, Kouyate has maintained his unique approach to fashion. Despite his distinct style, he managed to weave seasonal trends into his collection, which includes elements of western fashion, lace designs, animal prints, and fabrics rich in heritage. His commitment to sustainable practices remains at the forefront of his philosophy. “I’m trying to get back to the essence of Funkin’ Fashion. I’ll make it sexy, but I’ll make it high even if I choose it from garbage to preserve the dignity of the product,” Kouyate stated regarding his design choices.
