Like the product itself, the inspiration behind Superfruit Star was multifaceted. Amika wanted to introduce her favorite ingredient, the superfruit sea buckthorn, while creating a truly lightweight, high-performance oil.
“We aimed to create high-quality, effective, multitasking products that cater to hair’s diverse needs,” explains Dr. Shillingford.
This brand has a great hair oil in its portfolio called Water Sign, which is perfect for dry, coarse hair types and may be a bit rich for some heads. So after hearing from stylists and fans that people would appreciate a lighter hair oil, they set out to develop a product that was perfect for thin to thick hair types 1-3C.
“We wanted to offer true multitasking capabilities for consumers with thick, medium and fine hair who want a lightweight oil that can be used every day without build-up,” says the director. I added. “We went above and beyond when testing Superfruit Star on damp and dry hair, making it extremely versatile and allowing the product to be used throughout the styling process. Stylists and consumers will be able to see the benefits of shiny, ultra-smooth and lustrous hair every time they use it.

As fans are well aware, the superfruit sea buckthorn (an oil extracted from both the seeds and fruit of this powerful plant) is used in all Amika products. It has always been valued as a background character, allowing consumers to reap the benefits of its fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, but here it is taking the spotlight on its own.
“Sea buckthorn is known as one of the most powerful, omega-rich botanical sources on the planet. This super fruit berry nourishes the hair, scalp, and skin while restoring hair lipids. , enhances shine, manageability, softness and strength,” explains Shillingford.
Hero’s ingredients were solidified from the beginning, but blending them together was not easy. One of the brand’s biggest challenges was creating an ultra-lightweight oil with ingredients that met Sephora’s strict Clean + Planet-inspired standards. At the same time, they adhered to their own brand profile and sustainability goals.
“We wanted to use an oil that would create a barrier around the hair and provide protection and smoothness, while allowing the hair to ‘wash out’ quickly enough,” she says. “This basically means that the oil is stress-free for the hair and can be reapplied without build-up.
