Miami-based gallery Spinello Projects attracted a lot of attention at this year’s fair with a solo booth featuring local artist Nina Schrell. This presentation will feature an extraordinary collection of ceramics, sculptures, and wall hangings rendered in rich earth tones and deep blues that explore themes of mysticism, botany, and the human connection to nature.
The booth’s highlight piece, Schrell’s ceramic wall installation “Allegory of Florida” (2023), was purchased from the City of Miami Beach’s Legacy Purchasing Program (Art Basel Miami Beach to the City’s Art in Public Places Collection). An initiative to purchase artwork for Comprised of 100 opalescent stoneware ceramic pieces, the piece reimagines the Sunshine State as a goddess of female fertility.
Lehman Maupin
The Lehmann Maupin booth, which displays impressive works by notable artists such as MacArthur Binion, Marilyn Minter, and Cecilia Vicuna, is definitely quite popular.
Among the must-see highlights are Still-Life 4 (2020) and From, the Future 2 (2023). These are two captivating video installations by pioneering American artist Jennifer Steinkamp that explore the intersection of nature, technology, and movement. And See You Again (2024) is a mesmerizing acrylic on canvas painting by American artist Kalida Rowles. (Rawls’ first museum solo exhibition, “Away With the Tides,” is currently on view at the Perez Art Museum in Miami until February 2, 2025, and then at the Memphis Brooks Museum from March 19, 2025 to September 7, 2025.) )
Beyond Basel
Beyond the bustle of Basel, there’s no shortage of fairs and art shows to visit throughout Miami. Across the street is Design Miami, curated this year by Glenn Adamson with a blue sky theme, and the works on display celebrate the boldest innovations in design. Further south, Untitled Art Fair hosts a number of fascinating international galleries and is another must-visit destination during Miami Art Week.
