Released in 2006, Holiday has become an essential rewatch for fans obsessed with Amanda and Graham’s unlikely transatlantic romance. Set against a Nancy Meyers-esque English backdrop, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law fall in love at Iris’ beautiful and quaint Rosehill Cottage. The cottage has since spawned countless Airbnb imitators. But when asked about Britain’s iconic cabin in a recent interview, Law unapologetically told fans it had “bursted the bubble”.
Rose Hill Cottage, where Amanda stays when Iris (played by Kate Winslet) vacations at her Los Angeles mansion, has a cottage-core feel with cozy floral prints, a rustic stone fireplace, and mismatched shabby-chic furniture. This is typical. Like many others, the hosts of BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show revealed in an interview with Law on November 22 that they had always dreamed of staying in a cozy home. But he had bad news for them.
“That cabin doesn’t exist,” Law told them, taking in their horrified expressions before adding, “Oh, yeah.” He then explained that the Rose Hill Cottage that viewers saw on screen actually existed only in Nancy Meyers’ imagination.
“So, Director, she’s a bit of a perfectionist,” Law said. “She looked all over the area and couldn’t find the chocolate box cottage she was looking for. So she rented a field, painted it, and had someone build it for her.”
In addition to dashing fans’ expectations for the real-life The Holiday experience, he also revealed that the interior scenes of Rosehill Cottage weren’t even filmed in the UK.
“But here’s what’s interesting when you look at it,” he continued. “So we were shooting in the winter here[in the UK]and we cut every time we walked in the door, and then about three months later we shot the interior in LA.”
When the shocked hosts said they “couldn’t stand” the revelations, Law quipped: “Let’s burst the bubble.” sorry! ”
Rosehill Cottage may not exist in real life, but there’s some good news for fans. Myers’ vision was reportedly inspired by Honeysuckle Cottage in Surry Hills. This charming property was previously available for rent on Airbnb, so there’s always a chance that future viewers can experience Cameron Diaz and Jude Law’s timeless romance in real life.
